Sri Lankan surfers to get wildcards into
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 March, 2010 : – – The Surfing Sri Lanka movement recently created by the new Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka, received a major boost today when it was confirmed by the ASP that 2 local Sri Lankan surfers will benefit from wildcard entries into the first major Association of Surfing Professionals international tour event to ever be staged in the country’s history.

The 6 Star WQS Sri Lankan Airlines Pro to be held on Sri Lanka’s east coast at the world famous Arugam Bay between 18 – 24 June will now see some local surfers strutting their stuff amongst the world’s best contenders on the WQS circuit. Two Sri Lankan surfers will gain entry to the elite event as part of the ASP’s strategy to assist and promote local surfing at a variety of surfing locations worldwide.

It is proposed that the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event will be conducted the day prior to the main ASP event start in order to select 8 local surfers who will then surf-off in two x 4 man elimination heats. The first and second place-getters of each elimination heat will then advance to a “4 man mini final” on the first day of the WQS event to decide who will get the 2 wildcards on offer.
First and second place winners from the mini final will receive the 2 wildcards and enter the main event draw with all of the other international surfers there to contest the 6 Star Pro at A Bay. The Trials event is open to all male Sri Lankan surfers and registration for the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event will be conducted during the week of the WQS and the Surfing Federation’s first AGM at Arugam Bay.

Surfing Sri Lanka spokesman Peter Rob-o, is encouraging all surfers from around Sri Lanka to attend this very important week of ground-breaking surfing events to be staged at A Bay between 15 – 24 June. Surfing Sri Lanka (the marketing and promotional arm of the new Surfing Federation) will conduct the Trials event with the A Bay Surfing Club, long known for their ability to coordinate surfing activities on this coast.
Chairman of the A Bay Club, Fawas Lafeer, was ecstatic about the news and the recent developments made by Surfing Sri Lanka to get surfing organised and focused around the country for the first time.

The inclusion of two of Sri Lanka’s finest young surfers in the WQS Pro event is going to drive the performance levels higher than ever seen before and fuel the new resurgence of interest in Sri Lankan surfing.A? Local A Bay surfers such as Sri Lanka’s number one competitive surfer Asanka, who has a guesthouse on the famous pointbreak and has grown up in these waves all of his life, must certainly loom as a threat to the international contingent of surfers.
Through Asanka’s sheer local knowledge of the break, he will definitely be one of the surfers to watch. Adjustment to the ASP scoring criteria perhaps his only real threat to a possible victory on home turf or perhaps one of the other A Bay locals fired up to impress may also stand in his way. Surfers such as local young gun Siril Pranith who has been charging lately or Milan or one of the many other A Bay local surfers.
A?
A surprise could even be in store for the local Arugam surfers. The very strong surfing contingent from the south coast area of Hikkaduwa lead by local surfing identity Mambo Thushara and his brother Babaya or Gallamalli, will be there in force contesting the wildcard entries on offer from the ASP and thus continuing the age-old rivalry between these two powerhouse clubs of Sri Lankan surfing. Both clubs will be determined to show who is Top Dog at the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event.
A?
One thing is for sure, when 18 – 24 June rolls around, the Arugam Bay area is going to really come to life when it hosts Surf Week on the Sapphire Isle and surfing in Sri Lanka will, by karma and destiny, never be the same again.
