The ambulance of the Lahugala rural hospital ran off the road and crashed into a wayside tree causing injuries to a doctor and five others travelling in the vehicle and extensive damage to the ambulance itself.

The ambulance was on its way back after transferring a patient in critical condition to the Moneragala General Hospital.
A male nurse and an attendant of the Lahugala hospital, a relative of the patient, and the ambulance driver were among the injured. They were admitted to Siyambalanduwa Base Hospital from where four were transferred to Moneragala General Hospital. The driver said he lost control of the vehicle in his attempt to avoid a wild elephant that was standing on the road. Potuvil police are conducting inquires into the incident.

A wild elephant with gunshot injuries is walking on the banks of the Yalpatha tank on the borders of the Lahugala National Park. The residents of the area said they have informed the Wildlife Conservation Department. They said the jumbo plodding along the bank in pain would soon die of starvation and thirst if immediate treatment was not provided. Meanwhile Officer in Charge of the Lahugala Wildlife Conservation Office H.M.Gajaweera said they provided treatment to the elephant that was lying on the banks of Mahawewa tank about a month ago and released it to the jungle. He said the injuries had infected again and a team of Veterinary Surgeons from Ampara was attending on the elephant for further treatment. He was hopeful that the jumbo would recover soon.
