Kitesurf Sri Lanka goes to Arugam Bay!

With 9M2, 12M2 and a 14M2 kite loaded in the car, we headed 300 odd KM’s to the Bay of Arugam. Unfortunately the weather Gods were playing tricks on us, one minute blowing gentle puffs while the next gale force winds blowing at 30 knots plus! Yohan had fun with his trainer kite until the line snapped due to the strong wind! What else to do other than Surf till you drop dead. Arugam Bay was not quite season in full swing with none of the shore breaks functioning. It was only the main point with its super sharp coral that left us sliced quite a bit – battle scars we call them. Arugam Bay is certainly a lovely place. A bit hyped too much that we actually were expecting something else. Nevertheless, now we know, and one thing is sure, the kitesurfers will be there in May, June and July when the Winds pick up!

    Maybe soon when I get to Sri Lanka, I will visit Arugam Bay then have some relaxation and watch kite surfers.

    hi fred,

    lets see when we come in may. it might be cool to visit those parks. i will inquire from the department of wildlife about lahugala and revert with any information i have.

    i have convinced a colleague of mine to visit abay around the 28th. he’s a graffiti artist (aspiring), will ask him to meet you so that he could get some bearings.

    You know, Dil, Lahugala, Okanda, Kumana etc. have always been ultra safe for guys like me/us. We are not involved in any conflict and all these years all sides respected our neutrality.
    The research results depends on who conducts them.
    A Tamil might see things from a different angle than the STF….
    In my view: All is very safe for all visitors.
    There are no organized tours as such so far, but if you take me along I show you places NO local ever goes to.

    could you do a bit of research and see if there are tours to lahugala. is it safe, what is the process. i hope to come with some friends who also would like some safari. let me know.

    Can u explain what the Great US/CAN lakes and a few Blue/Green hot air baloons have to do with Arugam Bay please?
    Can these guys really fly that far?
