Pimp my (Arugam) ride

Another long delay between posts a?? must get into the habit of blogging more frequently! In our defence, Stu and I have been on full-time tour guide duty recently, first hosting our friend John from London for a fortnight and then my parents for just over a week.

They don’t like cricket… they love it!

Ita??s been great having the opportunity to catch up with news from home (not to mention getting a vital resupply of gin and books). Wea??ve done a fair bit of touring around the country, along with showing off some of the sights that Arugam Bay has to offer. Wea??re both really loving being here right now and having people here to go ooh and aah at the beautiful beaches and great food has reinforced just how lucky we are. My destination? Arugam Bay, the countrya??s surfing capital

Becky Lucas tours Sri Lanka to reach the worlda??s new surfing hotspot

Arugam Bay: Sri Lanka's Surf Capital

Ia??m sitting in the back of a rather bespoke mini-van: fur lines the floor, stickers speckle the ceiling, and Boney M rocks the stereo. The car has already been stopped by the police twice a?? though not for the crazy interior. Rather, Ia??m in Colombo, heading from the airport to the train station, and, 16 months after the end of the civil war, police stops are as much a part of getting around as horns and dodging stray dogs. My destination? Arugam Bay, the countrya??s surfing capital. Ia??ve tried the sport in Dubai, though not mastered it, mainly due to the flatness of the Gulf a?? as well as the early starts. Instead of hiring a limo a?? an affordable option, no less a?? Ia??ve chosen to brave the 10-hour train journey from Colombo right to Arugam on the east coast.

Air Taxi to Arugam Bay

SriLankan Air Taxi takes to the skies again

SriLankan Airlines will re-launch its domestic float plane service – SriLankan Air Taxi – commencing December in time for the winter tourist season.

SriLankan’s Head of Worldwide Sales Mohamed Fazeel said ” We will shortly be adding a new dimension to domestic travel, enabling travellers to reach most parts of the island within 40 minutes. International visitors arriving in Sri Lanka can go straight on to their destinations with convenient connections.”

SriLankan is planning to acquire two Twin Otter aircraft for the operation, each with a capacity of up to 15 passengers.

These twin-engined aircraft are currently being sourced. “SriLankan Air Taxi will supplement the country’s existing land-based domestic air services, as there are many parts of the country in which aerodromes are not conveniently located, but there are plenty of rivers and lakes that can serve as waterdromes. Located in Arugam, this coastal haven has been through a number of unfortunate circumstances and

one such stand out is the devastating Tsunami that wiped out half of Arugam Bay’s Historical stock prices exelon corp buildings, houses and its population in 2004. However, due to its popular attractions and its waves that enthral a surfer, this bay has significantly recovered over the years. Tourists from all walks of life have come together to make Arugam Bay one of the country’s most preferred destinations. The beach here is known among many as one of the best around the world and with its picturesque settings and its tranquil atmosphere, makes Arugam Bay an adventure for a traveller worth discovering. The Arugam Bay Surf Point is far more superior to the other parts of the beach due to the extensive work that has gone into it; this section of the bay was transformed from a wreck to a beautiful coastal paradise. Elephant Safari at Arugam Bay

Nancy has really wanted to engage with elephants while in Sri Lanka; she so loves them. We looked into the possibility of visiting elephant orphanages and retirement centres.
One at Kegalle on the way to Kandy looked like it might work. It’s run by a Westerner, but wea??ve heard some murmurings about questionable ethics as it maintains a breeding programa??for what purpose? A clearly legitimate sanctuary, also at Kegalle, was a possibility, but the gate fee is rather expensive for our budget.
The third option was one we took up while visiting Arugam Baya??an elephant safari, something thata??s offered in a number of Sri Lankan national parks. Of course, you cana??t get too close, so photographs are only possible under unexpected circumstances or with good telephoto equipment. We hired a tuk-tuk and driver through our hotel and at 4:00 p.m. headed out along the main highway to Lahugala National Park about fifteen kilometres out of town. In the excitement of the journey, I wasna??t as attentive as I might have been to the amazing savannah landscape and arid woodlands as I was on the return journey; so our first palpable experience was the goal of arriving at a huge expanse of savannah grassland with shallow lakes off in the distance Elephant Between Tres

Elephant Between Tres

. Our guide informed us that the entire landscape would remain under shallow water during the rainy season and become a sea of wetland sanctuary for all manner of water and wading birds that would share the land with the hundred or so wild elephants that live there.

No sooner had we arrived than we saw off in the middle distance three elephants browsing on the grassland with another seven or eight in the far distance. We left the Cheap midamor Continue reading ‘Elephant Safari at Arugam Bay’

We attempted to find a short cut from Arugam Bay to Tissamaharama by heading along the coast through Yala National Park, a bite-sized chunk of parkland out of the South-East corner of the map of Sri Lanka; but we could discover no means of transit and were advised that there were towns approaching it that were still militarily impassable.
(editor’s note: This is incorrect. There simply is no road, and no town at all)

:

3 wheelers need to tidy up their mode of ethics

Consequently our journey became a six-hour bus ride in searing heat, particularly when one added the heat from the constantly overworked engine and gearbox of the bus, and the heat thrown up from the black asphalted roads. We knew it would be an exhausting day, but we’re getting pretty used to this and can always console ourselves with the thought that things could be worsea??we could be travelling by train! Before our bus ride could begin, however, we had a few little snags to overcome.
No matter who we asked, we got a different answer about what busses were leaving Arugam Bay and at what times. Absolutely no official information! We were up early enough to make a leisurely start; but by the time we were out at the roadside, a very convincing tuk-tuk driver lied and said wea??d missed the direct bus from Arugam Bay. Sakura Guest House With Hosts

He convinced us that we needed to cross the causeway into Potuvil, which was a short enough journey, so we let him take us. As we arrived at the bus stand in Potuvil, a bus pulled out and roared off. A dozen tuk-tuk drivers howled in convincing chorus that it was the only bus of the day to get us to Tissamaharama.
One tuk-tuk driver convinced us (against all logic) that he could catch the bus if we hopped in his tuk-tuk quickly. After a few kilometres of falling further and further behind, we told him to return us to Potuvil. Despondently, we disembarked and were trying to pull ourselves together to consider our options when another bus went screaming by. This time a tuk-tuk driver who was quickly on the ball pulled up beside us and urged us Continue reading ‘Canadians and the AbaY Tuk Tuk scam mafia’

Tsunami Scars and Wounds

We awoke in our cabana on our first full day in Arugam Bay. No conventional windows in our nest on stiltsa??just large drop-down and lift-up shutters that open unglazed sea-view portals allowing balmy tropical breezes to flow unimpeded through the large room.

Arugam Bay. Beach. Not exactly overcrowded

Clapboard–gapped in places–provided rudimentary walls that did little to stifle the predominant thunder of the breakers below. I was the one who had the pleasure of opening up the room on our first morning and looked out across this beautiful bay in brilliant morning light, amplified in the golden sand receiving the white surf to the whitely, lightly hazed horizon, all under the bluest sky. Topical birds with colourful sounds sang pagan matins from the palms around the exquisite, but rather neglected groundsa??for here, as it would become apparent in the rest of Order silvitra Arugam Bay, motivation seems to be still floundering in currents of hopelessness left over from ebb and flow of conflict and tsunami floods. After our small dinner of cold vegetable rotis from the previous night, we were very hungry for breakfast; so after dressing and a quick visit to the water’s edge to anoint each other with the waters of the Indian Ocean, we headed out to the main road where we hoped that our experience of unmotivated food vendors of the night before would look like something different in the morning light View From Our Room at Rock View

. We were surprised to find little change. One rather busy place seemed to have its clientele, but refused to tell us their prices for food until it had been checked out along a chain of people into the dark inside. We were invited to enter with no answers provided, until our insistence brought an answer Continue reading ‘Canadian Visitors view of Arugam Bay’
