#37 Hideaway Hotel

Over the counter tretinoin topical #37 Hideaway Hotel (sign)#37 Hideaway is located about in the middle of the Bay, opposite Hillton Hotel.
Set in its own, very large tropical gardens you can truly hide away here.

Owned by Mr. & Mrs. Tissera for many years you will experience a type of true colonial setting. Sitting in the open restaurant of the main building, surrounded by attentive staff, impeccable table settings and traditional food you might have similar impressions the British loved Ceylon for years ago.
The well stocked, licensed bar and the odd Gin & Tonic (to keep a few mossies away of course..) will greatly assist this kind of experience.

Accommodation at Hideaway consists of upstairs rooms in the main building as well as separate stone build cabanas in the front garden. A new development is being completed near the main road, a nice looking 2 story private bungalow.

Do you have any nice photo of Hideaway?

#32 Tri Star Hotel (http://tristar3hotels.com/) areA?fact of two Hotels:
The old, original Tri Star with its large landscaped gardens has been around a long time.
It was managed by the family of the #16 Midbay Hotel for many years, on behalf of the Tamil owner, a doctor from Colombo.
Around 2002/3 the arrangement was terminated, the hotel refurbished and a small, oblong swimming pool placed in the garden. This was -and still is – the only pool in the Bay. A Jaccuzzi was place in a tiny room, under some stairs – a position in the open air would have been more popular maybe.

The first floor seen an a/c restaurant, a conference/cinema room and all the cabanas received a full face lift and furniture, imported from Indonesia.

The position of the old TriStar, however, remained land side, away from the popular beach.

It seems that the original owners entered into a partnership with a Muslim business man, Mr. Razak in 2004 or 2005 and a brand newA?A? “New” Tristar was constructed after the Tsunami. Opposite, on the beach front, in the (then) 50- 200 meter exclusion zone.
The new building has around 20 air con rooms, which many feel are somewhat too small in size. The hot air is blown into the hotel itself – which is a little unfortunate, maybe.
There is a good satellite TV system, a large flat roof top and a very small front, ocean facing garden.

Due to Muslim ownership it appears that there is no alcohol permitted inside the premises. This part of the Tristar is popular with NGO’s, government officials and other visiting dignitaries
Foreign visitors and tourists from abroad often feel that their preferences have not been fully addressed, but local visitors from Colombo and Kandy are said to be happy in the Himalaya tulasi price New Tristar Hotel.

#26 Farhath Guest House (Sign)#26 Farhath has only been opened recently; maybe in mid 2007.
The timing was not good for business, which thie year never came.
However, the owners are friendly and they did try hard to please:
The openeing ‘party’ went well; they were very generous and invited half the village.

Mainly, Farhath Guest House is a little road side, colorful restaurant, land side, about opposite to #25 Lucky Leprechaun. They seem to specialize in local food only.
In addition, there are one or two small cabanas for rent at very reasonable rates.

This stub has been written January, 2008.
Pings and Comments for this particular post have been disabled (for now), because for some strange reason #26 Farhath Guest House has attracted more spam messages and track-backs than any other post on www.arugam.info Generic for aciphex .

And that was before this post actually every had any content or photo in it.

Let us see what happens now:

#24 (Fantasy) Way of the Bay Hotel

#24 Way of the Bay Hotel

This is a new hotel development in Arugam Bay.
Way of the Bay did not feature in last year’s walk or listing.
It now appears in place of “Nina Hotel”, for which we no longer found a sign board, in mid 2010.

Background:

Mr. Sahabdeen is a native of Arugam Bay.
His father – we think his name was Nagorthambi? – once had an old tractor ‘David Brown’ plying up and down the old dirt road of AbaY.

In the 1980’s and maybe early 90’s Sahabdeen was a waiter cum manager of popular #o1 Stardust Hotel.
He learned his excellent skills there, under the direction of Danish perfectionist Per Goodman.

For reasons unknown to this reseacher, Sahabdeen decided to move on, and abroad.

We believe he made good income in kuwait, where he formed a family and saved some money to set up this new Hotel.

Now he is back agin in the middle east, completing his contract.

The hotel itself is run by relatives, but we are informed that it can be rented or given on a long lease for anyone interested.
End 2011 update:

We believe that this estblishment has now been leased / rented out A?and is run by others.

They have renamed the place “FantasyA?Way of the Bay Hotel” .
We are not at all sure what that implies:
It’s up to you to come, find out and let us know in YOUR feed – back!

Please contact Sahabdeen on his personal e-mail as below:

#23 Food Garden

#23 Food Garden

cimg0327.JPG

#23 Food Garden is fairly new in its present location, but the fast talking owner Hanifa and previous locations have been a land mark at Arugam Bay for a long time.

Hanifa learned to speak good English and acquired his brilliant cooking skills somewhere in the Middle East. On his return to Sri Lanka he opened a very small hut on the sandy beach front, in the middle of the Bay.
Thereafter, in 2003 or so the old Food Garden shifted to a more permanent location just in front of what is now #22 Rocco’s Hotel. Here business was brisk. A good name was established and many guests from Purchase trazodone hydrochloride Order lozolla #20 Aloha came to dine, as the Swiss owned cabana park had no kitchen facilities in those days.

Indeed, Hanifa even branched out into the small guest house business and build some some small rooms, right on the beach front. This was a brilliant location, but bad timing: On 26th December the Food Garden ceased to exist.
However,as far as the writer is informed nobody died or was seriously injured.
Although immediate assistance and new building materials were supplied to Haniffa,A?A? he decided to shift again, away from the unpredictable sea front to a location on the land side of the road, opposite #22 Rocco‘s.

Clever Hannifa sold the property to Roccos (who incorporated the sea front cabanas into their establishment) and business went down.
Not because of the quality of his food and service – but because of the war andA?A? few proper visitors in the Bay (NGO’s used to dine at other places).

Not contented, in 2008 the legendary Food Garden moved again!

Now, in Mid 2008 a new Food GardenA?A? is located somewhere near #32 Tristar and #37 Hidaway Hotel, on the land side of the main road.
Again, the reputation speaks for itself and Hannifa is one of the very few Dine-out Restaurants which manages to attract enough business away from all the hotels, which normally like their guests to eat in at all times. Competition is sharp, but good old Hannifa always seems to manage to get on top of them all, with an ever changing menu and innovative, good food.

#22 Rocco’s Hotel

#22 Rocco’s Hotel is a relatively new development formerly known as Tourettes’ Hotel.
Situated in the middle of the Bay, with main road as well as open beach access it has a perfect position. Well away from smelly, but colourful fishing operations.

The actual hotel has a strange, but appealing architecture sporting multiple roofs and terraces. The original seaside bar, ‘Rocco’s was washed away in December 2004 and subsequently replaced by a similar, but not quite as nice structure made entirely of natural materials. The main building was near undamaged and reopened early 2005.

#22 Rocco’s is a partnership of local, successful businessman Naleen, UK’s red Steve and New Zealander Ralph. Fellow Kiwi David, who in 2002 designed and constructed Roccos appears to have lost interest and has not been seen since 2004.

Whenever Steve is in residence and control of Rocco’s it is a well run, popular place with about 10 nice bedrooms.
The development occupies also includes a very fine position. A clear view towards surf point is truly memorable from a few additional rooms situated next to the bar. This little piece of prime land was purchased in 2005 from Mr. Haniff and added to the Rocco’s complex. Popular fast talking cook Haniff used to run his busy little restaurant named Food Garden from this very location before he moved to #23 Food Garden position on the main road, opposite.

Update, December, 2008:
The #22 Rocco Beach Bar has been re-designed. Yes again.
Now we have building No.:A?A? Mk3 in place.
The new building is in the same-same location. But a much lower construction.
The effect is said to be more cool – due to cross wind effects we presume.
The roof is made of clay tiles and not “Cajan” (Coconut leaves) as before.
In addition, the earlier land mark ‘landing strip’ lights have been replaced with better garden light features.

#03 Galaxy Lounge

#03 Galaxy Lounge

#03 Galaxy Lounge

#03 Galaxy Lounge is the third hospitality place on your left as you enter Arugam Bay.
It is one of the best and perhaps certainly the most interesting one of recent developments the Bay has seen in many years.
Well, actually it is the result of two developments in the same location..
Pretty London raised Sri Gunasena and Aussie hunk Surf-Waine just completed the first Galaxy Hotel in 2004….
Everybody agrees, that their second attempt, completed 2006 resulted in an even better and more beautiful ‘Lounge’ than ever before.
The couple had a very narrow escape at the time, but fate has blessed them with a nice baby son during 2005.
The family can be proud to be recognized as a fine meeting place for musicians and artists, such as painters. This seems obvious as you approach the seafront restaurant.
Cabanas, some build on high stilts, are all made of natural, local materials and are often decorated with innovative, beautiful works of art.
And there are paintings of a kind and quality not usually found in this remote region.
It almost seems like there is a Spanish influence somewhere; the odd Latin dance lessons are a fine compliment to this great ambiance.

There also is a good menu with fresh Humus, a good drinks selection and an open air restaurant with a clear view of the open ocean right in front.

#01 Stardust Beach Hotel

#01 Stardust Paxil avoidant personality disorder Buy lisinopril side is the very first Hotel you come to after crossing the Bridge and as you enter Arugambay. Hence we indexed Stardust No. #01.
But in any case “Stardust” has always been the “No. 01” address at the Bay, offering the highest class of hospitality available in the entire area.
When the late Per together with Merete settled in Arugam Bay this Danish couple established without any doubt very high, fresh standards of hospitality at Arugam Bay.
For many years the well run Stardust was just like an oasis in this very remote enclave.

With only a few highly original, but low budget establishments such as #05 Beach Hut, #45 Sooriya’s and #58 Rupas around in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s #01 Stardust’s high class, international cuisine together with a dozen or so perfect, ultra clean rooms firmly established Arugam Bay on to a global map.
Suddenly there was a place in town not just for surfers, but for demanding world travelers!
A man with a vision, a true pioneer, Per Goodman continued to develop his great resort until the end; of 2004. Stardust gained and maintained the reputation of being the finest Restaurant in the East, offering good local and always perfect International dishes in a beautiful location and setting near the large lagoon.

The Hotel’s own web site, designed by the late Mr. Philip has for many years been described as a ‘good source of information’ about Arugam Bay and the surrounding area.
Again, even the site was ahead of its time and rightfully still holds the No. 01 position on Google.
