Sunita’s “Best of Sri Lanka”

  • Pottuvil and Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay, 3km (2 miles) south of the small fishing village of Pottuvil, had a reputation as a surfer’s paradise before the area became unsafe due to incidents in and around Pottuvil and on the roads leading to it. It has long, empty beaches and a wide lagoon which is a haven for numerous bird species.

Gal Oya National Park

About 16km (10 miles) west of Pottuvil, Lahugala Buy diltiazem er was designated as a national park mainly to provide a protected corridor for elephant groups moving between the larger reserves of Ruhuna (Yala), to the south, and Gal Oya, to the north. In the dry season this small park is reputed to have more elephants than any other part of the country, attracted by the grazing around the reservoirs within the park.

Yala National Park

Yala National Park , one of Sri Lanka ‘s premier eco tourism destinations, lies 24km northeast of Tissamaharama and 290km from Colombo on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka , spanning a vast 97,878 hectares over the Southern and Uva Provinces

Yala West (Ruhuna) National Park is well recognised as one of the best parks in the world to observe and photograph leopards. The park covers an area of over 100,000 hectares and is divided into five blocks. Block one is the most visited area since it contains the highest density of leopards. However other areas of Yala such as Yala East had been closed to visitors for some years and it will take time to research leopard numbers in these areas. Yala West consists of scrub jungle, brackish lagoons and stunning rock monoliths scattered throughout the park, its eastern edge is bounded by the South East coast.

Arugam-Panama-Kudumbigala

South Along The East Coast

The road south from Children’s motrin price Arugam Bay Order cystone syrup has been closed for years. We got some bikes for Rs. 200 and started pedaling down it. The landscape is desolate, dry and severe. Their building the roads, it seems, from scratch. The fields are barren. Water buffalo wallow in puddles and peacocks pick at whatevera??s green. Therea??s nobody but military and construction workers and us.

We bike about 15 k to Panama, where there isna??t much. Bike another 10-15 through the scorching emptiness, protected only by youth and the motion breeze. Ia??m black as dirt now, but we didna??t notice. Then, after an eternity of barrenness, you get into the jungle. This is sorta where Yala East begins, I think.

Hidden away, therea??s this rock monastery called Kudumbigala. After the heat and dust of the journey, ita??s an oasis. Just to be in the shade. There were some STF (military/police) guys stationed at the bottom. They let us draw some water from the well. We poured a couple buckets over our heads and felt much better. The old monk up among the rocks and the caves was reading the newspaper. He said the place had been off limits and nobody visited anymore.

I saw some footholds on a rock and climbed it. There was a path leading to a jumble of rocks. Sadly, an overturned arrack bottle. I found a place in the shade to meditate. Halik is Muslim and asked the monk if he could locate Mecca and pray. That was cool. It was a really peaceful place.

For an island surrounded by water, and well-knownA?for ita??s ifA?not world-class, at least great-for-ameteurs surfing spots,A?its inhabitantsA?are surprisingly lax atA?engaging inA?water sports.

Expense is probably a factor. But maybe not a big one.A?Sporting as a leisure activity is mostly only common with a country that has a growing mid-incomeA?classA?population. The poorA?tend to get their thrills out of their jobs itself and the rich are far too lazy most often to engage in active sports, and the proportion that do are far too small to figure. One more nice traveler’s report

Purchase indocin for gout “One exception, if you like waves, is Arugam Bay, a couple of kilometres south of the small town of Pottuvil. The town was badly hit by the tsunami of 2004, but a lot of small new houses have been constructed since, funded by international aid and built with the help of foreign volunteers, very pleasing to see that out of tragedy came such help and generosity.”
A strange thing happened on my first day in Sri Lanka.

Recently Whacko, Indi and I went on a walkabout of the East Coast. Excited by stories of untouched beaches, exotic seafood and original gangstaa??s, we took the night train to Batticaloa. From there we headed down to Arugam Bay, famed surfing location and muse for naming of hip slipper brand.

The beach was good. Thata??s a blue whale of a compliment since we were sick of beaches by the end of the trip. There was this other bit of beach where surfers gathered called Peanut Farm, which we decided to cycle to. We rented push cycles for the day and set out. Day 1 a?? Arugam Bay

To Batticaloa

Cheap indinavir stones back_train1

We took the 7.15 train to Batticaloa from Colombo Fort, which seems to be the place from where most of our travels begin. It is also possible to get to Arugam Bay via Ampara but spending A?11 hours in a bus wasna??t exactly our idea of fun.

The train ride is long. We only got to Batti at 5 am. It stopped at various places for no apparent reason. Traveling on a Sunday night in second class will get you double seats for yourself. But, unless you are a midget, youa??d be hard pressed to get some comfortable sleep. Tickets are Rs. 500. Its a longass train ride that takes you through Habarana and Polonnaruwa seemingly just to avoid the hill country.

At Batti, following the guidance of Lonely Planet we visited a very mediocre looking dutch fort. The generalA?architectureA?of Batti is reminiscent of South India. There arena??t many trees but the ones there are have been colonized by pigeons, with very bad bathroom habits.

We ate at a restaurant called Hotel Thameemy at the end of main street. We had Parata and pol rotti with potato curry, pol sambol and beef. The food was excellent.

To Arugam Bay

The ride to Arugam Bay was in three stages. Batti to Kalmunai, Kalmunai to Akkaraipattu and Akkaraipattu to Pottuvil. The landscape is dry and arid. Its got a strange beauty about it.

The first two stages were in hot buses. We had interesting chats with the driver on the second stretch. The roads are being developed at a rate and this provides a lot of employment to area residents. On the stretch from Akkaraipattu to Aa??bay we took a tuk tuk. This cost us around Rs. 1300. We recommend you take the bus.

We stayed at Sooriyas, the only place in Sri Lanka (pendingA?verification) whereA?accommodationA?can be gotten for 200 bucks per person. The room comes complete with bathroom, fan and fresh linen. The host, Asraff, is friendly and a good cook. Food is billed for separately though and if youa??re looking for ultra cheap meals then Aliraa??s, a fewA?metersA?north on the beach side, is a good option.

Peanut farm

back_peanut1

We rented 3 push bikes and biked over to Peanut Farm. Bikes can be gotten from Hakeema??s for 300 rupees a day. Peanut farm is a surfing point that is roughly 8kms south of Arugam Bay. Its got beautiful deserted beaches and some interesting looking rocks on to the right side with some caves in them.

The road heads through fields flanked by thick dry zone forest. Elephants are said to haunt the roadsides after dark and we had a close encounter with one on the way back. It gave us the stink eye. We assume there is rap music involved somewhere.

This post might be a bit delayed because we are currently using internet that apparently uses smoke signals and monkeys overdosing on Acid for transmission provided by the dude over at indi.ca via dialog. Phone reception is particularly good with most areas covered by that operator.

Windsurfing Arugam Bay

Wind Surfing in Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka is blessed with the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, which lap the entire 1,585 kilometres of the coastline. This, together with the two seasonal monsoons that hit each side of the island at different times of the year, means that water sports such asA?Windsurfing can be indulged in at any time.

Windsurfing began in America sometime in the early 70s after the discovery that a mast located on a swivelling pivot could be used to steer a small sailing craft by using body weight instead of a rudder. The first boards made their way to Sri Lanka in the late 70s, when a group of Swedish holidaymakers decided to try to bring them along on vacation. After this more and more tourists started bringing boards, some of which were intentionally left behind. It was these boards that west coast locals used to learn the sport for themselves. Just South of Arugambay: A Human/Elephant Conflict

So, we rented some push bikes and set off for Peanut Farm. 100 meters out of the gate,A?Jerry fell over and skinned his knees. He had blood running down his legs but the cuts werena??t deep. We said wea??d wash it in the ocean and moved on. South of Arugam Bay Norvasc prescription assistance is a surreal landscape, surrounded by a sea of dry paddy fields, parades of water buffaloes, peacocks. Even elephants.

We left Peanut Farm because it was getting dark and wea??d been warned not once or twice but thrice about elephants. At least I had. I also ran into an elephant on the way to the bar once (in Yala) and he tried to kill me. I avoid wild elephants like Ministera??s sons, and Ia??d heard they were causing trouble in Arugam Bay.

Arugam Bay and our connection with A?Bob’s A?two surf boards….

Well, this most certainly isna??t my first surfboard but it was a special board. Maybe you will agree. It had a very, very interesting life! The one on the left.

The one on the right was Nataliaa??s first surfboard. The same very interesting life.

We had walked into the surf board shop at Sorake Beach on Nias, Indonesia to rent boards. We stayed at the Friendly Inn with Rick and Sheryl.

As we were staying there for some time, over the course of time, I had gone by the shop almost every day. The shop was between our bungalow and the point. We could either paddle by it of walk by it coming of going surfing.

There were 7 blanks standing in the corner of the surfshop. The shop owner said that an Ozzie had brought them and was going to shape them, but had suddenly changed his mind and left. There the blanks stood.

Like I said we were there for some time.

One day I got the idea to tell the shop owner that I would shape all of them, he puts up the materials. I had to glass these two but he would glass the remaining 5. I get the two boards. He gets the 5.

Here they are as you see them. It was my 108th and 109th board. Surfers remember such things, dona??t they? I mean unless youa??re some kind of machine in a manufactures establishment.

Anyways, no more renting two boards for the week. I put in a week of work and get two boards. Good deal, yeah? Natalia was well on her way to learning how to surf and so when she got this board she was ready for it. Natalia did the designs. We were limited to pigment colors. We were on Nias. It had taken the shop owner a three day turn around trip to go and get the glass, resin, acetone, etc. For some reason we named our boards. I had never done that before. Flower and Sunkiss.

So every evening, in the some what cool of the evening, Ha! a??we were at the equator, I was at his shop for that week shaping the boards, then glassing ours.

We stayed for 4 months with a turn around visa after two months.

We went over to Bawa at the end of our trip there on Nias. After Bawa we went to the Philippines for the typhoon season and then the next year we went to Sri Lanka. Eastern Province at Arugam Bay to stay with Fred and Somlak at their Siam View Resort.

We made a decision to leave our boards there as we were going to Japan. We could come back the next year and have them. That was our idea.

The painting of Flower and Sunkiss is on our patio of our bungaloo at Siam View, Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka late August, 2004. I had taken up water color painting as hobby.

In December of that year, 2004 the tsunami generated in Nias went to Sri Lanka, Winston salem healthcare coumadin clinic Arugam Bay and reclaimed Flower and Sunkiss.
