Elephant Safari at Arugam Bay

Nancy has really wanted to engage with elephants while in Sri Lanka; she so loves them. We looked into the possibility of visiting elephant orphanages and retirement centres.
One at Kegalle on the way to Kandy looked like it might work. It’s run by a Westerner, but wea??ve heard some murmurings about questionable ethics as it maintains a breeding programa??for what purpose? A clearly legitimate sanctuary, also at Kegalle, was a possibility, but the gate fee is rather expensive for our budget.
The third option was one we took up while visiting Arugam Baya??an elephant safari, something thata??s offered in a number of Sri Lankan national parks. Of course, you cana??t get too close, so photographs are only possible under unexpected circumstances or with good telephoto equipment. We hired a tuk-tuk and driver through our hotel and at 4:00 p.m. headed out along the main highway to Lahugala National Park about fifteen kilometres out of town. In the excitement of the journey, I wasna??t as attentive as I might have been to the amazing savannah landscape and arid woodlands as I was on the return journey; so our first palpable experience was the goal of arriving at a huge expanse of savannah grassland with shallow lakes off in the distance Elephant Between Tres

. Our guide informed us that the entire landscape would remain under shallow water during the rainy season and become a sea of wetland sanctuary for all manner of water and wading birds that would share the land with the hundred or so wild elephants that live there.

We attempted to find a short cut from Arugam Bay to Tissamaharama by heading along the coast through Yala National Park, a bite-sized chunk of parkland out of the South-East corner of the map of Sri Lanka; but we could discover no means of transit and were advised that there were towns approaching it that were still militarily impassable.
(editor’s note: This is incorrect. There simply is no road, and no town at all)

Consequently our journey became a six-hour bus ride in searing heat, particularly when one added the heat from the constantly overworked engine and gearbox of the bus, and the heat thrown up from the black asphalted roads. We knew it would be an exhausting day, but we’re getting pretty used to this and can always console ourselves with the thought that things could be worsea??we could be travelling by train! Before our bus ride could begin, however, we had a few little snags to overcome.
No matter who we asked, we got a different answer about what busses were leaving Arugam Bay and at what times. Absolutely no official information! He convinced us that we needed to cross the causeway into Potuvil, which was a short enough journey, so we let him take us. As we arrived at the bus stand in Potuvil, a bus pulled out and roared off. A dozen tuk-tuk drivers howled in convincing chorus that it was the only bus of the day to get us to Tissamaharama.
One tuk-tuk driver convinced us (against all logic) that he could catch the bus if we hopped in his tuk-tuk quickly. After a few kilometres of falling further and further behind, we told him to return us to Potuvil. Despondently, we disembarked and were trying to pull ourselves together to consider our options when another bus went screaming by. Tsunami Scars and Wounds

We awoke in our cabana on our first full day in Arugam Bay. No conventional windows in our nest on stiltsa??just large drop-down and lift-up shutters that open unglazed sea-view portals allowing balmy tropical breezes to flow unimpeded through the large room.

Arugam Bay. Beach. Not exactly overcrowded

Clapboard–gapped in places–provided rudimentary walls that did little to stifle the predominant thunder of the breakers below. I was the one who had the pleasure of opening up the room on our first morning and looked out across this beautiful bay in brilliant morning light, amplified in the golden sand receiving the white surf to the whitely, lightly hazed horizon, all under the bluest sky. Topical birds with colourful sounds sang pagan matins from the palms around the exquisite, but rather neglected groundsa??for here, as it would become apparent in the rest of Order silvitra Arugam Bay, motivation seems to be still floundering in currents of hopelessness left over from ebb and flow of conflict and tsunami floods. Tuk-ish Delight followed by Trinco and Back, Orbis, The Third Wheel, Shake and Bake, Mothertukkers, the Wolf Pack, The Dragon Wagon, Wherea??s Ali and Jar of Vegemitea?? in they came, a line of decorated tuk tuks carrying a bunch of excited, comically dressed foreigners.

Some 30 tuk tuks wrapped up this yeara??s Lanka Challenge which brought about 80 adventurous foreigners to the island to explore its scenic beauty and culture on board a tuk-tuk. As they went from point to point each day, they had to face many challenges involving culture and community in unfamiliar terraina??manoeuvring a trishaw being the biggest of them all.

Lianne Dawes and Karen Tonner from UK, the two a??Happy Hippiesa?? as they introduced themselves got down from the a??Muthertukkersa?? in multicoloured outfits. The fun-loving duo who profess a fondness for wine, photography and dancing said they wanted to do something fun and different which is why they decided to hit the Lankan roads navigating the tuk tuk.

a??Driving this was challenging and initially I was terrified. But later I really started enjoying it. When we had a couple of breakdowns, the locals came and helped us and that is something unheard of in our countries,a?? said Lianne.

Their 10-day long journey took them right round the country from Katunayake through Negombo to Sigiriya, Trincomalee, Dambana, Arugambay, Buttala, Weerawila, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Colombo. The participants were judged by their tour timing from one point to another and the performance of tasks. The tour included two camping nights; one with the wanniyala-aetto in Dambana and another in Botakadan camp in Weerawila which is designed using Land Rover spare parts. More than a year since the end of the civil war between the government and the Tamil Tigers, surfing is beginning to blossom in Sri Lanka. Arugam Bay, one of the countrya??s finest surfing spots, hosted the Sri Lankan Airlines Pro Surf tournament in June.
It was a great success. Arugam Bay Order chloroquine phosphate consists of a handful of villages on the east coast of the island with the nearby town of Pottuvil providing the bulk of accommodation and supplies.

Arugam Bay (A Bay) Cheap precose Lariam cheap is renown as one of the world’s top 10 surf spots but is perhaps less well known for this tree.

Probably the most photographed in the country there is no apparent reason why it might have grown this way.

Ok back to surfing….

The above pic was taken at The Point…not of me (dream on!) and not by me…which is the main break. It is a long right-hand point/reef break that breaks at the headland from anything between 2 and 6 feet but tends to max out after 6 foot.

Another break is Pottuvil Point…a 15 min tuk tuk ride from A Bay. It is every surfers dream tropical wave. A clean right hand break rolling across the bay towards a long deserted sandy beach dotted with some huge boulders at the waters edge.

Flights to Arugam Bay, Pottuvil: Ampara airport a vital hub

There is a lot of talk about opening up the treasures of Sri Lankaa??s neglected east coast (such as Arugam bay/Pottuvil Famvir dose over the counter ) to the wider world. However one of the biggest obstacles to such a process it getting there. Currently Arugam bay/Pottuvil is a 8 hour drive from Colombo a?? which doesna??t compare well with the 10-11 hour flying time from Colombo to London. The combination of regular domestic air services to Ampara airport and local entrepreneurs can remove this major logistical hurdle to developing this area.

Ampara airport (Air Force Base) is not exactly new door to Arugam bay. Yet it is the closest runway accessible via the existing road network. Current transport services such as the AbaY Taxi a?? which currently specialises in travel from Colombo airport to Arugam Bay a?? are well placed to make the air bridge viable.

Sri Lanka travel ban lifted

Many Britons looking to travel to Sri Lanka this year should be glad to hear that the British Foreign Office lifted its travel ban restricting travel to Sri Lanka this week. Previously travel was restricted in the northern districts (including Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Kilinochichi and Mannar) because of violent fighting between the government army and the national separatists.
