The town of nearby PottuVille welcomed the Vice President of Canadian Agro-Sustainability Partnership ( Buy keftab cephalexin CASP), Mr. Victor and his wife Ms. Petrescu this morning.

As usual, the newly arrived visitors are overwhelmed with proposals and project ideas.
Arugam.info however has observed and is frustrated that during the past 2 years the Bay itself has benefited nothing “Sustainable” from any of the hundreds of organizations passing through our area.
Photos of the auspicious PottuVille welcome ceremony are attached herewith.
Arugam.info has again crossed all fingers and one hopes to be able to report some realistic help and support for the Bay one fine day.

As stated, CASP is looking for Community based projects.

No doubt: The cumbersome application process alone should be sufficient to discurage lawbreakers and terrorists to carry out their deplorable plans in the West in future.

The often reported lack of cooperation between rival organizations has been disproven..
On a trip to OKANDA, at the entrance of the Yala East National Park, our reporter could not help to be rather impressed.

Of course, normally only one of the (up to 4) opposing adverts will be seen when hard working NGO’s pose in front of one of the ancient wells at Okanda (and elsewhere) to impress their gullible donors.
Remarkable! What a brilliant piece or coordination! No fighting for dominance here. Normally just one single side of the -still very dirty!! – wells was filmed of course.
Used entirely free of charge as a studio style backdrop for each Organization’s Self Promotion!
Well, well, well! Well done, mates.

Our nasty reporter didn’t apprechiate the wider backdropping either and went even further afield than remote Uganda.
He wanted us to publish shots of choked animals and other horrors – we declined because this is supposed to be a tourist promotion site.
But: Although poor, We do have a consience and concern for our environment!

Our Wild Life as well as Arugam.info regret that the budget of said Organizations did not stretch as far as the employment of a few local labourers.
Two full months after the Kataragama walk PVC and rubbish still litters one of the nicest part of our island.

10 local guys could have cleaned this beauty spot in one or two days, at ease.
People here do need education; this is where Western “experts” could have made a real difference.
Total cost: 10 x 5$/day = approx. 100$
The painting of self-adverts was obviously much more cost effective.

With the arrival of a flamboyant and somewhat colourful Australian investor local attention has recently shifted across the road, to a location directly opposite #50 Siam View.

Money changing activities, tour guides, boat trips, three wheeler donations (we have only 600 so far…) and property dealings are nothing new of course.
But this open activity is totally new to the Bay!
We have never seen such dominant signs as below:

Fishy boat buying and selling has been a lucrative business ever since uncoordinated NGO donated them to anyone, including many guys who never been near the sea.
However, it always made good publicity stunts and provided a quick fix for many NGO’s as we know.
New is the fact that a mere visitor from overseas has spotted this huge potential and entered the cash-for-donations market.
There are certain reservations and other suspicions about this man’s true intentions – but time will tell; it is not up to arugam.info to speculate or repeat rumors of such kind.
However, caution is advised in entering any business venture with this newcomer.

Speculation has it that donors boats might end up for export or be donated to Galle Harbour..; where a potential market opened up this morning….
Brand new outboard engines seem to have been purchased, still in their original boxes, unused of course.
Will they be returned to the main dealerships?
Or end up in Japan with Mr. Ja Ma Hammer or Miss Sue Sou Key?
Whatever, the idea makes perfect sense due to the oversupply of equipment.
And of course there is nothing illegal about it!
We reserve comment until we know more, obtain further details and know what the current by-back price levels are.
It is known, however, that a new 15HP Suzuki Kerosene engine now costs about 180,000Rs.
It is also known that a good boat was worth about the same, or slightly less.
Fully equipped, we are informed most NGO’s paid about 4-500,000Rs. for each boat.
To establish livelihoods etc…

New DS Office Opened

www.arugam.info is designed to concentrate on issues concerning Arugambay alone, but as we are governed by the nearby town of PottuVille the opening of a new office may have an effect onto life in the Bay.
A brand new Divisional Secretay Office (DS) was opened today in PottuVille.
In Sri Lanka, a Divisional Secretary implements Government policy on a rural or district level.
Our reporter was present and a few photos of the auspicious event are attached herewith.
The main sponsors and donors are the Italian Civil Protection on behalf of the Italian People.
The actual building is a fine design and it is hoped that the new location and equipment will be used for the benefit of the population of PottuVille.
Hopefully some progress will also come to the resort of Arugam Bay; which is governed by the office of the Divisional Secretariat of PottuVille in the Ampara District.

Beautiful Lanka

When careless pilgrims leave huge amounts of mess in a National Park, it is a disaster and a real thread to all animals, who often rummage for left over food in plastic waste.
Digested, they choke and many die as a result.
Kumana National Park is badly affected due to the thousands of pilgrims which transit to Kataqragama every year.

Sponsored or supervised by USAid the site shown is in front of the park ranger’s office, at beautiful Okanda Bay.
More and better photos follow when we return from our next safari, showing the actual site, USAid banners and promotions and may show up the failure of this large GO to control this outrage.
Even 2 months after pilgrims have left, nobody seems to be able to find the funds and the manpower to clean up our Nation’s greatest asset, the (normally) unspoiled Wild life and Nature.
The entire cleaning operation would cost no more than, say 100$.
This is obviously far too much for the Ox Frame, Sewage Lanka, USAids, Sword, Zoa & the Reds and all the other “Experts” who came to save our Nation.

News just in!
Charlie and Simon as well as Wolfgang are back in the Monkey House!

Now we have at least one explanation:
Simon’s overdue statement has been delayed because he is back inside.

Relax, No Problem!
This time it is only in the interest of Wolfgang’s eco project and our local wild life orphanage.
We will report more about the background soon, but today one important episode has been completed.

In brief, all four Arugambay, orphaned monkeys have been released back into their own habitat, the wild.
After a period of nursing and looking after them, the 3 males and one female were successfully placed into a safe area today.
It was never our intention to establish yet another zoo or silly tourist attraction and everyone, incl. all neighbors are very happy that this intermediate part of the ecoproject has been completed. Successfully today.

During AbHa’s recent research into the ‘War on Drugs’ we came across a rather iteresting graph. We feel it is important enough to share it with you and the young generation looking for fun in life.
The highly respected British Science Select Commitee collected data from relevant experts who have taken all relevant factors into consideration. They came up with a graph showing the actual harm drugs inflict onto society, the individual itself, as well as the underlying impact on their immididate family, the user’s health and all associated crime.

AbHa does not endorse the use of any drugs, but maybe our generation could benefit from a responsible re-classification of certain drugs?
Look where Alcohol, Tobacco and, say Ecstasy (A), stands right now.
And take a look at their present classification (legal).
No opinion here! Just Food for thought!
We have NO doubt, however, that Heroin, or ‘Brown Sugar’ is in its correct place (A)!

‘Cannabis drop’

The British Crime Survey which is published today is understood to show that drug use overall is down.

However against that background there are some individual increases, said BBC home affairs correspondent Rory MacLean.

The Science Select Committee said the present system was based on historical assumptions, not scientific assessment. Some of the drugs could be rated less harmful than tobacco or alcohol.

After last weeks unprecedented incidents we really thought we lost our brilliant reputation as a very peaceful, remote Bay.

Little wonder that our friends from Israel, including some attractive,young ladies packed their bags last week to escape yet another confrontation with angry Muslims. Many feel they have enough of it at home and don’t deserve similar impressions on a well earned holiday.
(Note the two girls on the left; they are also shown in our: “Surfers leaving the Bay” article). They returned to the Bay in less than ONE week! Respect!!!!
We are honoured that all of a sudden most guys (and specially the two girls mentioned) have come back to us to show solidarity, representing a very strong support and full confidence in the little Bay at Arugam.

Just as distant Governments warn of East Coast travels:
Here are our REAL travelers, rather than illinformed pen pushers – who voted with their presence.
And they show up all this nonsense and overreacting hype.
Being no expert at the complex Internet, and also a tiny bit drunk due to the ongoing celebrations, I don’t know right now how to copy and paste more and better photos into this space here (as yet..old man still learning…and so on…)

Who would have dreamed that our little Community would recover so quickly?
Again: Totally on our own!
Last week we really though that we lost years of good reputation.
And nobody would want to know us anymore. Or come to see and stay with us.

To be honest, we will show restraint and we will just have a low key get-together FMP on the night of the 5th October; that’s all.
Sad events happened outside the Bay and we also wish to show respect, of course.
It’s the Holy month of Ramadan …as well.
However, on a brighter and more cheerful note we are very happy to report that we have received our first photo collection from our good friend Ms. Line (sorry: that’s not her Line, but a Danish name).

Arugam- or Hardship Bay?

Arugam Bay has always been left to its own devices.
During the long civil war the Bay was entirely cut off from the rest of the island, indeed the check point at the only bridge closed at night. Every night.
At that time, for 20 years we had no doctor and not even one single police man in town, ever.

When a sort of peace settled, in 2002, little changed, but we had better access to PottuVille ‘hospital’, even at night. And for better or worse we had a regular police presence. No other infastructure was invested into at all. But we enjoyed being connected to mains power and some selected telephone lines this century.

December 2004 came along and everyone focused on Galle. Nobody reached Arugam Bay until 2005 and most would agree that activities of the few NGO’s passing through our resort were no help at all; most activities were perhaps even counter productive.
All large Organizations actually stayed in Ampara or PottuVille or helped in Panama. In places not affected by the floods and well inland.
Again, the Bay recovered quite well, largely on its own and just with the help of a few former guests and some private individuals.

This Presidential promise has been well implimented in Hambamtota; the Bay however is still waiting. For a road, a bridge or better: a BY-Pass to this very day. Or anything else.
All sorts of Organizations promised all sorts or ‘Projects’ – but none of them were ever even started.

The recent excodus of all but a handul of foreigners coupled with some totally unjustified travel warnings by a few western Governments our 2006 winter ‘season’ will see the final breaking point for many businesses in the Bay.

Having borrowed heavily, relying on at least a little business and some earnings, or trusting empty promises the majority of our hard working and optimistic hoteliers have no choice but to close for good.
It is impossible to pay the (by now) very high bills or pay wages to their staff as suddenly there is no more income.

AbHa regrets that the proven Association is no more in a position to help anyone financially. We are as good as bankrupt since giving our cash reserves away to the suffering and poor of our area in 2005.
We are looking into ways to reward everyone who has the ability to help themselves.
Sadly what seems to happen is the other way round: Only lazy & incapable guys seem to qualify for assistance.
In more than one case a totally unfair competition to a long established business has been funded by one particular NGO, compounding our difficulties.
Has anyone an idea what we should do?
