A(rugam) Praying Fisherman

In the artista??s own words: a??Fishermen from the rural areas still pray to the sea gods before they set sail early dawn, praying for safety as well as a good catch. Their lifelines are in the fishing industry. Dipping in the sea and rising up with arms wide open is part of the ritual, which is done seven times before the fishermen set sail. The picture was taken at Arugam Bay, and it is one of the rare sites in Sri Lanka which this ritual is still practiced.a??

After a short hiatus we are back withA?more onA?our backpacking venture. Expect more posts on more travels in the near future. You can also view a short grainy video of our stay at Aa??Bay here.

Day 2 saw us still at Arugam Bay and wondering what to do next. Consulting the trusty Lonely Planet Guide it was found that there is a rock monastery built in the middle of the jungle many centuries ago. The place is called Kudumbigala and further searching on the internet provided us with more information on it. Lonely Planet had never been thereA?due toA?the area being closedA?in times of war. Naturally, we jumped at the chance.

Getting to the Monastery

The monastery is located roughly 30Kms down the road south of Arugam Bay. The road heads fromA? Arugam Bay to Panama, which is about 16 kms away. Continue reading ‘Day 2 Arugam bay, Kudumbigala Monastery and Getting back to Batti’

Arugam Bay Beach

Lonely Beach near Arugambay

Also this most easterly point is the location of Sri Lanka's original Full Moon Party
If you are looking for a lonely but beautiful beach for camping, this is an ideal location. At Sangamankanda Point Generic zyprexa canada , I saw miles and miles of sandy beach and not a soul around. In fact this is known as the East most point in Sri Lanka.

This is close to Zyvox generic name Potuvil – Batticaloa (A4) road and it lies about 25km from Potuvil towards Akkaraipattu. The main road does not go close to the beach, so you have to turn towards the sea side and travel further 3-4 km on a gravel track. For the last bit, you may need to walk through an open land where there is no roads but only footpaths.

At the beach you will see an abondoned lighthouse. From there you will see endless beaches on both sides. One notable feature about Eastern beaches is that it has wider beaches than Southern or Western beaches. Here at Sangamankanda, the beach is over 100m wide.

This place is a real treat for a hiker!

Arugam Bay is a bay situated on the Indian Ocean in the dry zone of Sri Lanka’s southeast coast. The bay is located 320 km due east of Colombo. It is a popular surfing and tourist destination. Many of the buildings were destroyed in the 2004 tsunami. Due to its popularity among tourists, the area has managed a slow recovery by private initiatives only. The main road through town has still not been repaved. By the end of 2008 no help has been received from any official source or international organizations. An exception is uncoordinated support for fishing folk as well as many school rebuilding programs, resulting in a continuation to provide only separatist schools for each community. Indomitable spirit

...The Laya Project does not dwell on the tsunami itself, nor is any footage on the DVD of it included.

Project takes a fascinating musical journey across tsunami-affected communities

The 2004 tsunami caused havoc across Asia, affecting many coastal communities from the Maldives in the Indian Ocean to the Indonesian archipelago. We know of the horrors of this tragic event from the news media which showed the awful devastation. But what of those who survived? How have they survived?

The Laya Project shows the incredible spirit and resilience of the coastal peoples.

A team of producers, filmmakers and musicians from the Chennai-based EarthSync music label travelled for two years across the tsunami-affected region, visiting coastal communities and recording the music each one played. The aim was to produce a part-documentary, part-music video and part-travelogue that would show the incredible spirit and resilience of these coastal peoples. The result is a wonderful package, the Laya Project, which includes two audio CDs of studio and field recordings, produced by Patrick Sebag and a film (DVD) directed by Harold Monfils. The film has already received worldwide airplay and has garnered many awards. The Laya Project does not dwell on the tsunami itself, nor is any footage on the DVD of it included. For an island surrounded by water, and well-knownA?for ita??s ifA?not world-class, at least great-for-ameteurs surfing spots,A?its inhabitantsA?are surprisingly lax atA?engaging inA?water sports.

Expense is probably a factor. But maybe not a big one.A?Sporting as a leisure activity is mostly only common with a country that has a growing mid-incomeA?classA?population. The poorA?tend to get their thrills out of their jobs itself and the rich are far too lazy most often to engage in active sports, and the proportion that do are far too small to figure. Wind Surfing in Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka is blessed with the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, which lap the entire 1,585 kilometres of the coastline. This, together with the two seasonal monsoons that hit each side of the island at different times of the year, means that water sports such asA?Windsurfing can be indulged in at any time.

Windsurfing began in America sometime in the early 70s after the discovery that a mast located on a swivelling pivot could be used to steer a small sailing craft by using body weight instead of a rudder. The first boards made their way to Sri Lanka in the late 70s, when a group of Swedish holidaymakers decided to try to bring them along on vacation. After this more and more tourists started bringing boards, some of which were intentionally left behind. It was these boards that west coast locals used to learn the sport for themselves. Dilsiri Welikala is already comfortable out at sea. a??Ita??s an amazing feeling, harnessing the power of the wind to propel yourself along,a?? he says. He talks of skimming along the water for hours at a time and of chance encounters with pods of dolphins. Though he needs a little help getting his 10 square metre kite up, once thata??s done and the lines and harness are secured, hea??s good to go.

a??Your kite becomes like an airplane wing,a?? says Dilsiri, explaining that he controls the direction of his kite by changing the angle of his board. Kite surfers are slaves to the winds and will drive many hours to catch the right kind. As a result, this group has been all over the island, from Puttalam to Arugam Bay. SRI LANKA: Fighting over fish

Order ethionamide tb
COLOMBO, 16 October 2009 (IRIN) – The seas off Batticaloa in the country’s former war-torn east are home to one of the most fertile spawning grounds off Sri Lanka, and fishermen rarely had to travel far for a good catch.

But of late, traditional fishermen who use boats powered by outboard motors or canoes to fish have complained of meagre harvests.

“I went out on five consecutive days, and only yesterday did I return with some fish, but only 6kg,” said Tamil Chelvam, who operates a boat from Tirivendu beach, just south of Batticaloa.

Locals blame a recent influx of large fishing trawlers into their waters for their dwindling catches. Before the encroachment, a good catch would earn fishermen up to US$174, and a normal catch, about $85. Continue reading ‘Fishing Trawlers at Arugam Bay & North’
