Wea??ve been called mad before. The last time that springs immediately to mind was just before buying a tuktuk to drive on Sri Lankaa??s roads. Thumbing my nose to the doubters, Ia??m now convinced that wasna??t such a stupid decision. We have the flexibility to come and go as we please and far from creating jealousy locally, wea??ve been warmly welcomed into the tuktuk fraternity. Ita??s a brotherhood that has saved us at least three times after breaking down on deserted roads at all hours of the day and night.A? Faster response than the AA and totally free of charge.

Life here in Arugam continues to treat us well. Stu and I have been focusing a bit more on our surfing, and are making sure that we are getting out in the water at least once a day. The swell is still fairly small, but it sounds like it should be building through June and July, which should give us a wider variety of breaks to explore.A? At the moment, Whiskey Point continues to be our favourite spot, with a consistent and mellow wave that always provides some fun. Wea??ve had some great sessions there, both alone first thing in the morning and with surfers from around the world. Yesterday we made the most of having our own tuk-tuk and not needing to book a driver, by setting off on our earliest surf yet, leaving the hotel at 4.30am in order to arrive at Whiskey Point in time for first light. We went with Jimmy, one of the hotel guests, who was leaving at 7am that morning (hence the need for such an early rise). It was amazing to watch the sun slowly rising above the sea and watch the sky change from blue to pink to orange as we bobbed around on our boards. Pure bliss!

The Surfing Sri Lanka movement recently created by the new Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka received a major boost today when it was confirmed by the ASP that 2 local Sri Lankan surfers will benefit from wildcard entries into the first major Association of Surfing Professionals international tour event to ever be staged in the country’s history.

The 6 Star WQS Sri Lankan Airlines Pro to be held on Sri Lanka’s east coast at the world famous Arugam Bay between 16 – 24 June will now see some local surfers strutting their stuff amongst the world’s best contenders on the WQS circuit. Two Sri Lankan surfers will gain entry to the elite event as part of the ASP’s strategy to assist and promote local surfing at a variety of surfing locations worldwide.

It is proposed that the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event will be conducted the day prior to the main ASP event start in order to select 8 local surfers who will then surf-off in two x 4 man elimination heats. ARUGAM BAY- SRI LANKA


Arugam Bay is located 220 km due East of Colombo. It is a popular surfing and tourist destination in Sri Lanka. Ia??ve been to Arugam Bay before in its tourist season and ita??s an absolute beauty. The waves the wind and everything was so perfect. However in the raining season ita??s not the case; you cannot even go out because of the rain. In the raining season ita??s very hard to find a day without any rain. Thanks to a weather forecasting website I was able to find a day without any rain. It was June 2009 nearly four and a half years after Sri Lanka was hit by the Tsunami in 2004, and surprisingly Arugam Bay is one of the very first coasts to get hit by the Tsunami in Sri Lanka.This time I visited the place to see how it progress after Tsunami.


Many of the buildings were destroyed in the 2004 tsunami. The post Tsunami recovery has by and large been very quick despite the remoteness of the area. Many NGO’s and private organisations have help rebuild the area and some of the guest houses are now much better than before the wave. Both north and south of Arugam Bay there are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Sri Lanka.Due to its popularity among tourists they are managed a slow recovery by private initiatives only.
